Dressing Up 02:19
I get out my Sunday shirt And my wingtip shoes. You wear your strapless dress And your good perfume. You know and I know That we know what each other likes. We’re dressing up cause we’re going out tonight. I have on my father’s watch And my tailored suit. You makeup your face Like you used to do. You know and I know That we know what each other likes. We’re dressing up cause we’re going out tonight. We’re going out together. It’s been such a long while. All dressed up for each other. We’re going out in style. I slick back my hair And put on aftershave. You wear your mother’s pearls And we promenade. You know and i know That we know what each other likes. We’re dressing up cause we’re going out tonight. We’re dressing up cause we’re going out tonight.

The fall line between The upland and the coastal plain Is clearest in the winter, When you can see the ridge rock and sway. The slow water’s frozen Along the river’s edge. We throw stones at the ice To try to break it. We go looking for some sign of spring. We turn it into a game. We comb Bear Island Between the Potomac and C&O. Under black bare trees, Along the Billy Goat. I find a bluebelle. I’ll take it with me when i go. March 4th, Mather Gorge, Great Falls.

Flowers of black cottonwood Lie across my lap. A shape in the clearing moves Like a thought I shouldn't have. I know when i get that look You’re too shy to ask. I know that you want me to Tell you that "I am here for good." The sky turns an uncertain blue Where it isn't overcast. It’s past the time we really should Start walking back. I know when you give that look We’ve lost the time we have I know that you want me to Tell you that "I am here for good." It’s more complicated than the truth. What this is can’t last. But tell me what else can i do when You tell yourself that "I am here for good?"

An ordinary night, new kent county. I’ve got your number, but i’m not counting on you. I’m sitting and drinking at a table for two waiting for you to show. If you don’t I don’t know what I’m gonna do. I’ve got one over eight to go. You arrive as i’m leaving, pretend not to see me so i walk out to my car; thinking to myself ‘this is something else,” and then before i know it there you are. You look at me. I look at you. I say “Of course you know this means war.” You shake your head, laugh and say “I’ll tell you if I find something to die for.” ordinary night, new kent county.

Frost on the front lawn. Clothes out on the bed. You say something I don't hear. I lie and say I did. I follow you downstairs. we take it step by step. We try and keep to our routine. Something's got to give. Heating up the car. Already running late. I sit behind the wheel and wait; thinking about the time I waste. I tell myself everything is ok. Everything is ok. Everything is ok. Why are there not enough hours in the day?

You had a dream you were dreaming That we were still young and in love; Lying in bed with our baby. When you dream that you’re dreaming You’re about to wake up. I was the woman and you were the man. A house and a job were enough To keep us together and happy. When you dream that you’re dreaming You’re about to wake up. When you wake up you’ll do what I do. Search the other side of the bed To find that I’m not beside you. You’ll remember the things that we said. You had a dream you were dreaming A perfect picture of us Arm in arm watching the sunrise. When you dream that you’re dreaming You’re about to wake up. As the sun rose the sun showed us The passage of time, Then a stillness came down from above To capture this moment forever. When you dream that you’re dreaming You’re about to wake up.

In the yard i sit and linger on what I used to call a lawn. Now’s what i’d call a laugh of leaves With my Betty Blue by my feet. I am king Of everything Everything In my kingdom. The afternoon adores the way Betty and i just while away. She’ll scratch the dirt and i’ll do the same. We’ll sit and watch the sky for planes. I am king Of everything Everything In my kingdom. She looks at me and watches close As I stretch my legs as far as they go. I’ll make a face when i decide that it’s time to go inside.

If only for tonight you weren't gone, so I could let you go. Wherever you go, you take the lead and I follow. If only for tonight you weren't gone, I'd show you all the things I know. Nevermind the things that you never knew. If only for tonight you weren't gone, so I could save you. And then like I said, I'd let you go and I'd go alone without you. The end is hard to see between you and the devil and the deep blue sea.
